NEVER GIVE UP !!!!!!!!!

•July 22, 2008 • No Comments

by Winston Churchill

NEVER EVER EVER EVER,, GIVE UP

NEVER EVER EVER EVER,, GIVE UP

On October 29, 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Harrow School to to hear the traditional songs he had sung there as a youth, as well as to speak to the students. This became one of his most quoted speeches, and perhaps the best known very short speech. Interestingly, its fame is due to distortions that evolved about what he said, as related in this explanation.

The myth is that Churchill stood before the students and said, “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.” Then he sat down. In reality, he made a complete speech that included words similar to what are often quoted.

This was one of the inspirations speeches by Churchill during World War II. It is amusing to see how the one section has been changed and quoted as the whole speech:

Almost a year has passed since I came down here at your Head Master’s kind invitation in order to cheer myself and cheer the hearts of a few of my friends by singing some of our own songs.
The ten months that have passed have seen very terrible catastrophic events in the world–ups and downs, misfortunes– but can anyone sitting here this afternoon, this October afternoon, not feel deeply thankful for what has happened in the time that has passed and for the very great improvement in the position of our country and of our home?

Why, when I was here last time we were quite alone, desperately alone, and we had been so for five or six months. We were poorly armed. We are not so poorly armed today; but then we were very poorly armed. We had the unmeasured menace of the enemy and their air attack still beating upon us, and you yourselves had had experience of this attack; and I expect you are beginning to feel impatient that there has been this long lull with nothing particular turning up!

“But we must learn to be equally good at what is short and sharp and what is long and tough.”

It is generally said that the British are often better at the last. They do not expect to move from crisis to crisis; they do not always expect that each day will bring up some noble chance of war; but when they very slowly make up their minds that the thing has to be done and the job put through and finished, then, even if it takes months - if it takes years - they do it.

Another lesson I think we may take, just throwing our minds back to our meeting here ten months ago and now, is that appearances are often very deceptive, and as Kipling well says, we must “…meet with Triumph and Disaster. And treat those two impostors just the same.”
You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; certainly many more than will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination.

But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period–I am addressing myself to the School–surely from this period of ten months, this is the lesson: Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our School history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.

Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these Islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer.

You sang here a verse of a School Song: you sang that extra verse written in my honour, which I was very greatly complimented by and which you have repeated today. But there is one word in it I want to alter - I wanted to do so last year, but I did not venture to. It is the line: “Not less we praise in darker days.”

I have obtained the Head Master’s permission to alter darker to sterner. “Not less we praise in sterner days.”

Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days–the greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race.

Its an epic venture into the arena of diplomacy…..

We started off as a little baby crying, howling. But you know now that baby knows how to walk, and talk so he has grown up, which makes us all happy.

Putting together a 45 member organzing committee was a really hard task, A VERY HARD ONE INDEED. But anyways we were able to do it. Now we are turning it into a 45 member a big, huge family.

This family represents the cream of Lankan youth. It is a set of young lads who are willing to take up any challenge… any barrier that comes in their path…

A set of guys and girls who have the power, potential and the strength to change the world…

Thats the strength and the pride of our family….

So guys get together work hard, die for the target you wanna achieve….

We’re off!!!!!YAY!!!!!

I think it hit most of us that this was actually happening and that it was coming true was when we were sitting around the table stamping, folding, and pasting the envelopes containing letters and registration forms to be sent out to 200 schools all over Srilanka.

The letters have been sent and..awaiting the first round of registration…trying to find ppl to be district coordinators…so if any1 knows any1 hu cn do da job tell us!…

wut else…hm,,,,…..the meetings are less tensed up now..we are finally gettin to noe each other and we are “bonding”…yay!!! one big fat happy family!!!! fat on account of it consisting of 45 members….not because we discriminate the horizontally challenged or anything..(naa…these ppl only bug the ‘vertically challenged’…..

International Press Corps

•March 31, 2008 • No Comments

With Sri Lanka Model United Nations, a completely new concept has been ushered into the chronicles that we may leave behind…..and that is the International Press Corps.

At SLMUN 2008, the main objective is to mould the minds of the new generation, into one which is democratic and just. This would eventually lead towards the building of a democratic country with knowledgeable citizens. However, for any country to stand strong in their ideals, its foundation must contain a powerful and unbiased media system.

At SLMUN 2008, the initial building stone has been laid for a strong and powerful media system by introducing and establishing the International Press Corps.

The IPC will function throughout the organizing sessions of SLMUN 2008 as well as during the 3 days of the conference. It is their responsibility to publish the official SLMUN 2008 bulletin on all 3 days. Furthermore, they will present the official souvenir on the final day as well. It is also within their responsibility to type and print the draft resolution submitted by the delegates.

The Press Corps consist of a number of reporters, photographers, artists as well as Information and Computer Service Personnel.

It will be their duty to listen in on the caucusing of resolutions, debating on resolutions etc. and write articles on how and what is being done in their relevant committees. The photographers are expected to take photos of the of caucusing and debating within the committee rooms and the artists are expected to sketch or draw the interesting events occurring throughout the conference.

All in all, this is a new experience being offered to the students of Sri Lanka and is shaping up to be quite an interesting venture!!!

This conference consist of 8 main committees which have been identified as the best committees for the students to engage in and which will give a clear understanding about the UN procedure and the role of a diplomat in the arena of diplomacy. The 8 committees are as follows:

  3. Commission on Status of Women
  4. The Concurrent General Assembly Plenary
  5. UNESCO
  6. Human Rights Commission

  8. Special Committee on Global Warming

A main feature of this conference is the diversity of the committees which deal with a variety of topics covering each and every aspect of the present times. This allows delegates to not only learn the fine art of convincing and debating but also familiarity of the different issues faced by the people, thus creating a sense of awareness among them.

Sri Lanka Model United Nations Conference 2008

Achieving perfection is inevitable in the Anandian context. The United Nations Association Study Circle of Ananda College (UNA Study Circle, Ananda College) has turned out to be a modern evidence of the above success story. Letting the novel concept of Simulation of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation leap in to the academy of diplomacy, the milestones it has accomplished in the school based background of diplomacy will lie as unapproachable landmarks ever. Thus the latest outlook of the UNA Study Circle, Ananda College legacy emerges here as “Sri Lanka Model United Nations 2008 (SLMUN) with the collaboration of a talented group of youth in Sri Lanka.

In the business of life, modern homosapien has divorced from the divine notions of non violence and negotiations, but entered into matrimony with the violence of the indirect fascism. Accordingly a permeable environment has been created for the repeat of vicious circle of poverty along with the other inhuman practices. To restrict such proceedings, the United Nations has been a vital tool for the past six decades. To make this humane body immortal, words will find it incapable of describing the importance of the leaders of tomorrow. Though worldwide Model United Nations conferences are held at every nook and corner, the necessity of a local MUN conference focused at a decentralized platform, was deeply felt by the UNA Study Circle, Ananda College. Finally, paving the path to prepare our own students to step into the shoes of ambassadors, Sri Lanka Model United Nations Conference 2008 was born.

UNA Study Circle, Ananda College was once a champion in the field of diplomacy, by captivating the best delegation at the Indian Model United Nations Conference 2006. At another occasion, a perfect organizer, owing to Simulation SAARC 2005-07. Sometimes a transmitter of the message of MUN perception to numerous schools. But all the time it remained as a pioneer of student based diplomacy, surpassing the local boundaries. This sort of enormous success lie as the foundation of the epic venture that is yet to set out for voyage as the largest conference ever organized in Lankan history, aimed at future leaders.

Sri Lankan Model United Nations Conference will be a perfect avenue for the young minds to compete with one another, in an attempt of proving the best of best. From the rural village school until the extent of international schools around the world, SLMUN 2008 would form a rainbow of hundred colors, marking the beginning of a new era in the legacy of humanity filled with morality. It would create a revolution that modifies the noble conceptions of peacefulness and freedom. Let us believe in hope, that may the seed of SLMUN planted in near future, would grow into a rich and powerful tree, so once it bears its fruits and seeds, the smell and the taste could tranquil the blazing inhumanity.
